doesn't have any mechani- cal flaws," Kelly said. "Once in a while he will hit a cou- ple heavy, but his momen- tum is through the target. He's not off target. Even if he hits one a little heavy, he's still clearing most of his kicks with great ease. A re- ally solid kicker. Very con- sistent." In game-like conditions thereafter, Yoon remained virtually flawless, other than a block by cornerback Cole Luke coming off the edge. "He has an interesting background," Booker said. "Most kickers are soccer players. Justin is a hockey guy. A couple of things change with that. He's wired to be aggressive and all that, very similar to Kyle. "That's what you look for when you're recruiting guys. They have to have con- fidence in what they do and they have to have the mind- set that any time, any place, any situation, I'll get the job done." Yoon will be the seventh true freshman kicker to start at Notre Dame, joining Dave Reeve (1974), Craig Hentrich (1989), Kevin Kopka (1995), Jim Sanson (1996), Bran- don Walker (2007) and Nick Tausch (2009). His starting holder, sophomore backup quarterback DeShone Kizer, is also new to the job. Sophomore punter Tyler Newsome worked on his craft while redshirting last year and it has paid off with consistent 50- to 60-yard punts and strong hang times this preseason. PHOTO BY JOE RAYMOND
