FEBRUARY 2018 THE WOLVERINE 17   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Women's gymnastics junior Olivia Karas began her Michigan career with a bang in 2016, claiming the Big Ten's Freshman of the Year award in her debut campaign. She followed that up by being named to the All- Big Ten first team as a sophomore in 2017, while also winning the team's Co-Most Valuable Player honor. Karas will look to build on those accomplish- ments as a junior in 2018, but in the meantime here are a few other interesting facts you may not have known about her: Nickname: "Liv." Favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor: "I'm a huge fan of KouZina — it's that Greek food place on Main Street. I would definitely suggest that one." Best meal she can cook by herself: "My house is on a strictly chicken, zucchini and occasional rice diet. Sometimes we'll do noodles or shrimp instead of rice, so for me I'd have to say chicken, zucchini and rice." Sports she plays besides gymnastics: "I've never done another sport, but I live with field hockey players — I've taken up learning field hockey lately, even though I'm not very good at it. I've also learned a little soccer here and there." Hobbies: "I love shopping — I could shop until I drop. I also love to write, and do it at least once a day. I'm a big Netflix binge watcher, too. Sometimes I make breakfast for dinner— I whip up pretty good chocolate chip banana pancakes." Favorite TV show: "'Friends,' for sure. I'm a big fan of 'Gossip Girl' — I'm currently re-watching it again. I also love 'How I Met Your Mother.'" Favorite movie: "I love the movie 'Love Actually' — it's a Christmas movie. I'm also a big fan of 'The Proposal.'" Dream vacation: "I'm from Chicago, so I'm a city girl. I'd say something along the lines of Paris, London, Italy or any big city in Europe." Favorite venue she's been to: "When I was a senior in high school, I competed in Dallas' AT&T Stadium, and it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen." Favorite professional athlete: "I'm a big Kerri Strug fan. She was a gymnast a while back who did the vault and landed on one leg. I'm also a diehard Chicago Blackhawks fan, so I love [center] Jonathan Toews." Role model: "It's cliché, but my mom. She's my best friend, the best mom and she never misses a meet. She's also the most organized woman I've ever met." Why she chose Michigan: "I realized this was where I wanted to go the minute I stepped into this building. It's also not too far from Chicago, but I just love Ann Arbor and everything about it. There are so many things to do, and this campus is the most beautiful campus ever. I knew it was the place for me the moment I walked in." What she hopes to do after gymnastics: "I'd like to travel the world because I've never gotten the chance to with gymnastics. I'd also like to go into sports broad- casting or something having to do with sports media. It'd be nice to get a job in that realm and work my way up." Her overall experience at Michigan: "I honestly can't imagine a better experi- ence. Competition-wise, it's been so cool to see how the three different teams I've been on have performed in meet settings and in the gym. Here at Michigan in general, I've learned so much about different sports, people, ideas and places you can go, so it's just been everything I could've imagined and more. I still have a year and a half left, so I can't wait to see what all happens in that time." — Austin Fox Karas was a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore last season.
