OOSTERBAAN FACELIFT TURNS HEADS Bennie Oosterbaan Field House was built in 1980, but it sure doesn't look like it after the recent interior overhaul to turn it into part of the football team's new performance center. With the lacrosse teams departing for the freshly opened Athletics South Com- petition and Performance Project (an in-depth look at that facility can be found on pages 46-51), an opportunity opened for the football team to make the building named for the former three-sport standout and three-time football All-American its new home for building up the school's next gridiron superstars. The $21-million renovation plan was approved by U-M regents in February, and nearly triples the space that the football team had for strength and conditioning available in the Al Glick Field House, going from 12,000 square feet to 32,000. The new look drew tons of praise when Michigan released a few pictures, including this one, on Twitter Jan. 17 — it was retweeted nearly 1,300 times and received more than 5,000 likes in only five days — but players seemed to be most excited about the new half-court basketball floor. The team has already tweeted out videos of current stu- dent-athletes putting the court to use, while former players couldn't hide their jealousy. "If they had that court when I was there it would've been [over]," Dallas Cowboys rookie defensive end Taco Charlton tweeted. PHOTO COURTESY U-M ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS
