WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS 3-0 OVERALL, 2-0 BIG TEN Michigan kicked off its 2018 cam- paign Jan. 5 with an impressive 196.200-195.675 defeat of No. 4 Ala- bama … Junior Olivia Karas won the all-around with a score of 39.350 and earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors for the sixth time in her career as a result … The Wolverines followed up their win over the Crimson Tide with a 197.550-194.925 victory over No. 29 Ohio State Jan. 13 … Several Wolverines won individual honors af- ter taking down the Buckeyes, includ- ing rookie Syd Townsend (Big Ten Freshman of the Week), junior Emma McLean (Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week) and senior Paige Za- ziski (Big Ten Gymnast of the Week) … U-M also topped No. 21 Illinois 194.975-194.325 on the road Jan. 19, and checked in at No. 3 in the College Gymnastics Association poll Jan. 15. MEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD U-M was tabbed at No. 24 in the Jan. 10 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings … The Wol- verines debuted its new U-M Indoor Track Building Jan. 13 for the Wol- verine Invitational, hosting Eastern Michigan, Hillsdale, Michigan State, Notre Dame, South Florida, Western Michigan and Western Ontario … Freshman Jandon Briscoe had an im- pressive debut, winning the 400-me- ter final in 47.82 … The Wolverines posted 147.5 points (narrowly edging out Ohio State's 146.5) to come in first out of four teams at the Simmons-Har- vey Quad Jan. 20 in Ann Arbor. WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD U-M was tagged No. 12 in the Jan. 10 edition of the USTFCCCA rankings … Michigan kicked off its season Jan. 13 inside the new U-M Indoor Track Building with the Wolverine Invita- tional … Sophomore sprinter Jade Har- rison was a double winner, coming out victorious in the 400 meters (55.48) and the 4x400-meter relay (3:44.91); she was one of 13 top-five performances on the day for the Maize and Blue … Fifth- year senior distance runner Erin Finn placed fourth in the mile (4:40.17), fin- ishing behind only professionals and clocking the best time in the country among collegians, and was named Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week Jan. 17 for the 15th time in her U-M career … She followed it up by running the 3,000 me- ters in a career-best and school-record time of 8:58.69 at the Simmons-Harvey Quad Jan. 20 in Ann Arbor. WATER POLO 3-2 OVERALL, 0-0 CWPA U-M was tabbed No. 8 in the pre- season Collegiate Water Polo Associa- tion poll, its 38th straight with a top- 10 ranking … The Wolverines opened their season at the UCSB Winter Invi- tational Jan. 20 in Santa Barbara, Calif., and fell to No. 3 UCLA (5-4) before defeating No. 21 Cal State Northridge (14-5) and No. 19 UC Santa Barbara (10-7) … Michigan wrapped up the event Jan. 21 with an 11-4 win over No. 16 UC San Diego and a 5-3 loss to No. 5 Arizona State … In the event's final day, senior attacker Caroline An- derson became the first player in school history to record 200 career assists. ❏ Senior attacker Caroline Anderson became the first player in school history to record 200 career assists, and had 204 after the season's first five contests.
