142 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2014 FOOTBALL PREVIEW DL PLAYER BIOS POSITION COACH Mark Smith is entering his first sea- son as defensive line coach at Michigan. In the previous three seasons on Brady Hoke's staff, he coached linebackers for the Wolverines. Prior to his stint in Ann Arbor, he accumulated eight years of defensive coordinator experience at Ball State (2003-08) and Indiana State (2001- 02). He has coached linebackers since 1988 and oversaw the linebacker position for Hoke for two seasons at San Diego State (2009-10). Before his stint at Ball State, Smith spent 15 seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana State. He began his coaching career as a wide receivers and secondary coach at Defiance (Ohio) High School (1979-81), and also spent time as an assistant coach at Bowling Green (1982-85) and Rose Hulman (1986-87).
