164 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2014 FOOTBALL PREVIEW DB PLAYER BIOS POSITION COACHES Curt Mallory enters his fourth year coaching the secondary at his alma ma- ter. This season, he will split the duties, coaching just safeties. A two-year letter winner under legendary head coach Bo Schembechler and Gary Moeller (1989-90), he was a player on five Big Ten championship squads (1988-92) in Ann Arbor. Last season, the secondary ranked 66th nationally in pass- ing defense (231.3 yards allowed per game), working with several young defensive backs, like then-freshmen Channing Stribling and Jourdan Lewis. Mallory returned to Michigan in 2011 after a one-year stint as Akron's defensive coordinator (2010). He also was Illinois' co-defensive coordinator for three seasons (2007-09). He gained 10 years of experience coaching secondaries at Illinois (2005-09), Indiana (2002-04), Central Michigan (2001) and Ball State (2000). Mallory began his career as a student assistant at Michigan. Roy Manning, who joined the Michi- gan staff last year as outside linebackers coach, took over coaching cornerbacks this season. Manning's budding collegiate coach- ing career began in 2010 as a defen- sive graduate assistant at Cincinnati. He helped coach the offensive line at Michigan as a graduate assistant in 2011, Brady Hoke's first season in Ann Arbor. He got his first full-time assistant job at Cincinnati, coach- ing running backs for the 2012 season. When Bearcats coach Butch Jones took the Tennessee job, Manning accepted the running backs job at Northern Illinois, but he was there for just a few short weeks before Michigan called. Manning was a four-year letterman at Michigan, playing outside linebacker (2001-04). He started 10 games and played in 37. His first two years on campus coincided with Hoke's last two in Ann Arbor as an assistant coach. RETURNING PLAYERS SHAUN AUSTIN • S R-So. • Plymouth, Mich.
