Some kickers, like Remy Hamilton, have excelled from the get-go. Hamilton, who had attempted (and made) just one field goal in 1993, was given the starting duty the second game of his sophomore season, after Erik Lovell missed an extra point in the season opener. In his first game as starter, Hamilton nailed four field goals, including a 42-yarder with just two seconds remain- ing, to lift Michigan past Notre Dame 26-24. He hit 22 of 26 field goals that season, scoring a single-season program record 101 points. He earned 1994 All-Amer- ica and All-Big Ten honors. In other years, the Wol- verines have not been so lucky. Brendan Gibbons earned the start at the begin- ning of the 2010 season, but he hit just 1 of 5 attempts and was benched for Seth Broekhuizen (who wasn't a huge upgrade, hitting 3 of 9 field goals). Michigan also cycled through multiple starting placekickers in 2007, 2002 and 1999 (see chart). Senior Matt Wile (above), who is taking over placekicking duties, will look to follow in the footsteps of Remy Hamil- ton, who had a successful first year as a starter in 1994.
