260 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2014 FOOTBALL PREVIEW BY TIM SULLIVAN T here is axiom in the recruiting world that holds true more often than not when it comes to landing a particular prospect: "If you can get him on campus, you have a chance." The vast majority of players who commit to a given school have been on campus at least once, and more often multiple times. While there are some exceptions to the rule, it is even more helpful for a program's pursuit of any individual to not only get him on campus for one or more unofficial visits — those for which the prospect pays his own way to campus, his lodging and food in town, and all other expenses — and also an official visit. On the latter, the school is able to show off even more of its football and academic programs. More importantly, it is allowed to pay the prospect's way. Unofficial Vs. Official An unofficial visit takes place any time a prospect decides to make their own way to a school's campus. The player and his family pay for their transportation to town (making unofficial visits financially taxing for those who are a plane flight away from that given school) and all other expenses that are included in the visit. A prospect can make unlimited unofficial visits to a school's campus during the recruiting process. The official visit, on the other hand, is a much more concrete entity.
