UNDER THE DOME "Mike just wasn't able to physically do some of the things necessary to continue to play," Kelly summarized. Deeb, who saw his first action last season in a special teams role ver- sus USC and LSU, was in a similar numbers crunch at linebacker, and he hoped to pos- sibly help at defensive end. However, Deeb underwent elbow liga- ment reconstruction that included nerve involve- ment. "That nerve injury caused his retirement from being able to play," Kelly said. 'END' OF THE LINE Meanwhile, Hill an- nounced Aug. 15 via Twitter — "after long thought and prayer" — that he would return to his native Texas and en- roll at Texas Tech. "I'd like to thank the coaches, teachers and staff for all they did dur- ing my time there," Hill added. Hill appeared in nine games last season as a freshman pass-rush spe- cialist and finished with seven tackles, two of them sacks. Technically, he was listed as the No. 3 Sam linebacker this spring behind junior James On- wualu and sophomore Greer Martini, but in nickel packages or pass- ing situations, Hill was aligned as an edge pass rusher. The weakside end po- sition includes senior R o m e o O k w a r a a n d s o p h o m o r e A n d r e w Trumbetti, plus junior Doug Randolph also began challenging for playing time. Even before Hill's de- fection, defensive end was a prime recruiting priority for Notre Dame this year. The lone de- fensive end recruit in 2015, Wallace, is now at Arizona State. Also, in August 2014 Kelly indicated that the two best speed rushers on the team were the then freshmen Hill and Wil- liams, both of whom are also no longer on the roster. Losing the three edge rushers to transfer was not going to have any bearing on the 2015 sea- son, but by 2016 or 2017 it might be felt more with fewer numbers and less experience. ✦ Order your copy today! Theodore Hesburgh, CSC, states in his forward about Jim & Jane Gillis's book. Jim also authored the successful book, A Son of Notre Dame. A must read! This book has more Notre Dame history than just the cemetery.
