Notre Dame was already expecting to lose three linebackers in the offseason with Joe Schmidt and Jarrett Grace set to graduate and Jaylon Smith expected to leave early for the NFL, but the trans- fer of sophomore Kolin Hill has cre- ated a situation where the Irish will have just six scholarship linebackers on the roster. "One day you think you need one inside linebacker and one outside linebacker," Elston said at media day. "The next day, something changes and you've got to go three total lineback- ers, a dual guy, an outside and an in- side. All of that stuff is changing on a daily basis." While Elston wasn't directly refer- encing the need at linebacker when he made that statement, it's clear that he was hinting that the position has become more of a priority for the staff, and the recent offers reflect that. In June, the Irish extended scholar- ship offers to Houston Aldine four-star inside linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch and Washington (D.C.) St. John's four- star outside linebacker Aaron Hans- ford, and have been in contact with the prospects ever since. McCulloch, who is ranked as the No. 10 inside linebacker and the No. 213 overall prospect in the nation, tips the scale at 6-2 and 235 pounds.
