JULY 2014 ■ 111 WOLFPACK FOOTBALL ference. The Trojans will play at Carter- Finley Stadium next on Sept. 5, 2015 in what is expected to be the opener, and NCSU will travel to Troy, which is located in Troy, Ala., on Sept. 23, 2017. These will be the first ever meetings between the two schools. Troy, which will host Duke this fall, went 6-6 last year overall and 4-3 in the Sun Belt. The school went to four bowls in five years between 2006-10, but has not had a winning record since. The 2017 road date fills a gap left when LSU bought out a previously scheduled home-and-home series with the Pack for 2017 and 2020. Reports indicated that the Tigers paid NC State $100,000 to cancel the series. The addition of Troy leaves one more opening in the 2015 schedule. The Pack is scheduled to play at Old Dominion and at South Alabama next fall in out-of-confer- ence action. NC State will host Clemson, Louisville, North Carolina and Syracuse in ACC action, and travel to Boston Col- lege, Florida State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. The Wolfpack is expected to play at Notre Dame in 2017 in addition to at Troy. That Fighting Irish game would satisfy a new mandate from the ACC that came down in May to play at least one non- conference game against a team from a power conference starting with the 2017 season. Games against Notre Dame count toward that requirement. The Fighting Irish are scheduled to come to Carter-Finley in 2016. Bryant Shirreffs Decides To Transfer Bryant Shirreffs became the third NC State scholarship quarterback that has departed during this offseason. He decided to transfer from the Wolf- pack June 18, shortly after he returned to playing quarterback. The sophomore from Jefferson (Ga.) High played quarterback, fullback, linebacker and running back dur- ing his one year in Raleigh. The former Rivals.com two-star prospect was featured last season in the wildcat formation. The 6-3, 223-pounder rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries, and was 4-of-5 passing for 17 yards with a score. The two touchdowns both came in the 23-21 win over Richmond Sept. 7, 2013. Shirreffs was moved to running back during the spring, but then returned to quarterback shortly before he transferred. Shirreffs was named to the All-ACC Aca- demic team. "I just realized that in the next couple of years, my services at quarterback will be better at somewhere other than NC State," Shirreffs told the Atlanta Journal-Consti- tution. "Just football-wise, it was a tough decision over the last couple of months thinking about it. And I just went with it last week.
