140 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ FOOTBALL RECRUITING New Bern is wisely using its premier play- maker as a quarterback, but his future lies on the defensive side of the ball where he has the tools to be a shutdown, ball-hawking corner. 11. LINEBACKER TANNER MUSE Belmont South Point High Measurables: Listed at 6-4, 205 pounds. Stats: Tallied 48 tackles, two interceptions and five passes broken up in eight games as a junior. Also re- turned a kick for a score and blocked a punt. Rivals.com rankings: Three-star prospect, No. 31 safety nation- ally and No. 19 player in the state. Colleges: Verbally committed to Clem- son Dec. 8. Scouting report: Muse is a heavy-hitting safety at South Point High with the frame that should allow him to bulk up into a line- backer, where he might be better suited to play from an athletic standpoint. 12. ATHLETE VAN SMITH Cornelius Hough High Measurables: Was 6-0, 179 pounds at the Rivals Camp Series event in Charlotte in March. Rivals.com rankings: Three-star prospect, No. 24 athlete nationally and No. 12 player in the state. Colleges: Verbally com- mitted to Clemson in August 2013. Scouting report: Smith is one of the most versatile playmakers in the state. He has the athleticism and skills to potentially be a running back or receiver on offense or a safety or corner on defense, and be equally effective at any of them. The hunch is Smith will start his career at safety. He transferred from West Mecklenburg to loaded Hough in the offseason. 13. RECEIVER JUVAL MOLLETTE Randleman High Measurables: Was 6-4, 186 pounds at the Rivals Camp Series event in Charlotte in March. Stats: Caught 56 passes for 661 yards and nine touch- downs as a junior. Rivals.com rankings: Four-star prospect, No. 235 recruit in the class, No. 29 re- ceiver nationally and No. 7 player in the state. Colleges: Verbally committed to North Carolina June 21. Scouting report: Mollette passes the eye test for a receiver. His size should make him a threat in the red zone and on deep balls.
