JULY 2014 ■ 139 ■ FOOTBALL RECRUITING broad jump and 12 reps at 185 pounds on the bench press. Rivals.com rankings: Four-star pros- pect, No. 47 recruit in the class, No. 4 weakside defensive end nationally and No. 1 player in the state. Colleges: Named a top three of Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech in June. Scouting report: Dalton has the classic size and frame of a big-time defensive end prospect, and he couples that with good athleticism. He is not the elite-level athlete of some previous tall, lean in-state defen- sive ends like Julius Peppers, Mario Wil- liams and Quinton Coples, but he moves well enough to likely become an impact pass rusher in college. 6. RUNNING BACK NYHEIM HINES Garner High Measurables: Was 5-8, 178 pounds at the Rivals Camp Series pre- sented by Under Armour in Charlotte in March. Stats: As a junior, rushed 299 times for 3,137 yards and 49 touchdowns, caught 29 passes for 599 yards and nine scores, threw a touchdown pass, aver- aged 23.7 yards on 12 punt returns and ran four kickoffs back for an average of 46.8 yards. Rivals.com rankings: Three-star pros- pect, No. 9 all-purpose back nationally and No. 10 player in the state. Colleges: Has offers from Arkansas, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Louisville, NC State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vander- bilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia, among others. Scouting report: Hines is one of the best playmakers in the state, and a chief reason why is his speed. Hines is a track star who has been clocked as fast as 10.52 seconds in the 100-meter dash. The only question on Hines is does his size mean he will have to play slot receiver in college or can he stick at running back? He has the potential to be a threat as a kick returner in college, too. 7. OFFENSIVE TACKLE EMANUEL MCGIRT Durham Hillside High Measurables: Checked in at 6-5, 271 pounds at the Rivals Camp Series stop in Charlotte in March. Rivals.com rankings: Three-star prospect, No. 54 offensive tackle nationally and No. 20 player in the state. Colleges: McGirt ver- bally committed to UNC June 17. Scouting report: McGirt's body is start- ing to fill out impressively. He's gained more than 30 pounds since his junior sea- son and looks to have room to add another 30 without sacrificing much foot speed or athleticism. Needs to get stronger as he continues to grow. 8. OFFENSIVE LINEMAN MASON VEAL Charlotte Ardrey Kell High Measurables: Listed at 6-6, 290 pounds. At the Shrine Bowl Com- bine at Rocky River High in Charlotte in April ran the 10-yard dash in 1.82 sec- onds and the shuttle in 5.20 seconds. Had a 7-7 standing broad jump and did 16 reps at 185 pounds on the bench press. Rivals.com rankings: Four-star pros- pect, No. 121 recruit in the class, No. 14 offensive tackle nationally and No. 6 player in the state. Colleges: Verbally committed to North Carolina March 29. Scouting report: A big lineman who does a good job of holding his ground against quick pass rushers and driving ends to the ground on his run blocks. He is fun- damentally sound, which helps compen- sates for his average athleticism. 9. RUNNING BACK BRYCE LOVE Wake Forest High Measurables: Checked in at 5-10, 184 pounds at the Rivals Five-Star Challenge presented by Under Armour in Baltimore in June. Stats: Rushed for 1,973 yards and 26 touchdowns to help lead Wake Forest to the 4-AA state title game last season. Rivals.com rankings: Four-star prospect, No. 98 recruit in the class, No. 5 all-purpose back nationally and No. 4 player in the state. Colleges: Listed East Carolina, Florida, Georgia, NC State, North Carolina, Stan- ford and Tennessee as his favorites in June. Scouting report: Like Hines and Fra- sier, Love is a speedster and home run threat every time he touches the ball. He decided to forego track this spring to focus on football, but is one of the best sprinters in the state with a personal best of 10.68 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Playing in a triple-option attack at Wake Forest High, Love will need to improve his receiving skills for college, but he has the makeup of a playmaker at the next level. 10. CORNERBACK MIKE HUGHES New Bern High Measurables: At the Shrine Bowl Combine held at Washing- ton (N.C.) High (which is known for its fast track) in June, Hughes measured 5-10, 179 pounds and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds. He also had a 4.27-second shuttle time, a 10-3 standing broad jump and did an impressive 25 reps at 185 pounds on the bench press. Stats: Playing quarterback as a junior, Hughes completed 133 of 236 passes for 2,035 yards with 15 touchdowns and eight picks, and ran 173 times for 1,244 yards and 27 scores. Playing defensive back as a sophomore, Hughes notched 43 tackles, five interceptions and 11 passes broken up. Rivals.com rankings: Three-star pros- pect, No. 53 cornerback nationally and No. 22 player in the state. Colleges: Listed a top five of Florida, NC State, North Carolina, Ohio State and South Carolina in June. Scouting report: Hughes is, pound for pound, one of the best athletes in the state.
