Maurice Hurst Jr. Turns Heads
With His Athleticism
Charlie Stevenson always smiled to
himself when it happened. Coaches
from the host of schools recruiting
6-2, 305-pound defensive tackle Maurice Hurst Jr. never failed to react
to the deviation in the big bruisers
game film.
Theyd be watching Hurst pound
away in the trenches, muscling up
on overmatched offensive linemen
and clearing the way for runners at
Xaverian Brothers High School. Then
theyd reach the part where Hurst
himself did the running, including
a 75-yard breakaway touchdown
rumble.
Invariably, Stevenson heard about it.
Hes making cuts back, carrying
people into the end zone, Stevenson said with a chuckle. Everybody
looks and goes, What the hell is
that?
Im like, Are you recruiting him
as a running back? Theyd say, No,
but we dont have any defensive
tackles for us that can do that. It was
funny how it came up. He showed
everybody his athleticism, and thats
one of his big strengths. Hes big,
hes strong, hes physical, but people
Hurst is a 6-2, 305-pound defensive tackle, but he once had a 75-yard rushing touchdown in
high school.
