football recruiting issue Delano Hill Took A Winding Road To Ann Arbor The road from Cass Tech High School in Detroit to Michigan Stadium is an easy one to take. Fortythree miles of Interstate 94 separate the Wolverines home field from the powerhouse high school team that has sent nine players there over the past five recruiting classes. For Cass Tech safety Delano Hill, however, the path wasnt so simple. He committed to Iowa April 15, 2012. Eight months later to the day he switched that commitment, choosing to become a Michigan Wolverine. The decision to pick Iowa was an easy one. Like Michigan, Iowa has put plenty of focus on Cass Tech. The 2012 class saw two Technicians defensive backs Ruben Lile and Laron Taylor sign with the Hawkeyes. When head coach Kirk Ferentz let wide receiver coach Erik Campbell go in December, however, the situation changed. I think the thing is really, we were trying to make sure Delano held his commitment to Iowa, Cass Tech head coach Thomas Wilcher said. Its not that Michigan never asked about him, I just asked that he honor his commitment to them and let Coach Campbell keep the strength that he has in Cass Tech. Once that kind of broke down [when Campbell was fired], they clearly felt they didnt have to hold any type of commitment to it. Its free game. I think thats what it was, and Delano saw a situation and boom he Hill initially committed to Iowa, but eight months later he switched his pledge to U-M. photo by tim sullivan
