womens basketball T he final buzzer sounded and the scoreboard read: Michigan 70, Michigan State 69. As the Wolverine womens basketball program continues its ascent, scenes like this will be more commonplace, but on Feb. 16 it was a day of joy and exhilaration. Michigan had won just one game in the last 21 meetings of this lopsided in-state rivalry. No one on the team had ever beaten the Spartans. So after celebrating with her team and giving a big hug to first-year head coach Kim Barnes Arico, senior guard Kate Thompson made a beeline to the courtside seats, where former teammate Ashley Jones (200510) was sitting. Thompson leapt at Jones, toppling her over in a big celebration. She was a senior here when I was a freshman, and she helped me out so much, Thompson said. This is such a big win for the program, that I needed to celebrate with her, too. Because even though shes not playing here anymore, this win was as much for her and other former players as us. In front of a raucous Head coach Kim Barnes Arico and atheltics director crowd of 5,800 the biggest David Brandon celebrated after the Wolverines snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Spartans with a 70-69 of the season the Wolverines built a late nine-point victory Feb. 16. photo by per kjeldsen lead and held tight through Wolverines Rejoice After Big Win Over MSU
