He was only 3�� years old when he lived in modest quarters in Romania at the height of the country���s revolution in 1989, but he can recall gunfire on Christmas Eve that left stray bullet holes in his family���s balcony. His parents each brought home about $100 a month when food didn���t cost much less than it did in the United States. It took a lottery win ��� literally ��� to change their fortunes. The Meskos took a chance when the United States Government held a green card drawing in 1997, and they won one of only 55,000 visas awarded from millions of applicants. They started modestly in a small apartment in New York before moving to Euclid, Ohio, and then finally to Twinsburg, Ohio, where Mesko blossomed as an athlete, earning ��� and accepting ��� a scholarship offer to Michigan.
