INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MOTTE, RACINE GRAB BIG TEN HONORS Michigan's hockey team recently featured a pair of headline grabbers, when junior forward Tyler Motte and senior goalie Steve Racine accorded First Star and Second Star notice, respectively, by the Big Ten. Motte scored three goals over the Feb. 5‑6 weekend, including Michigan's only two in a 3‑2 overtime loss to Michigan State at Joe Louis Arena. He came back with a power‑play goal the next day in the Wolverines' 4‑1 triumph over MSU. Racine posted a 1.94 goals‑against average and a .947 save percentage versus the Spartans. He made 71 saves combined in the split of that series. MALIK CAPTURES WEEKLY AWARD Michigan junior Jathan Malik earned his first‑ever Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week award Feb. 9, after boosting his team in a very productive stretch. Playing in the top singles position for the Wolverines, Malik fashioned a 2‑0 record the previous week, including a win (6‑2, 6‑4) over No. 12 performer Nicolas Alvarez of Duke. That victory helped the Wolverines shut out the No. 25 Blue Devils Feb. 7. Two days earlier, Malik knocked off Cleveland State's Mirko Radosevic, 6‑3, 6‑4. In doubles, Malik and junior Tyler Gardiner cruised to a 3‑0 mark. They won in the No. 2 doubles slot versus Cleveland State, and at No. 3 in matches against Duke and Detroit. Those victories helped the Wolverines post five consecutive victorious matches for the first time since the 2012‑13 season. — John Borton Junior forward Tyler Motte earned Big Ten First Star honors after tallying three goals to help U-M split a pair of games against Michigan State Feb. 5-6.
