MICHIGAN BASKETBALL but finished out a lost week on the worst possible note. Breakout Performer — Junior point guard Derrick Walton: Walton helped Michigan respond to its worst week of the year by scoring a career-high 26 points at Minnesota in a dogfight win over a desperate, Big Ten-winless group of Gophers. He then had to battle himself at home versus Purdue, scoring his only six points in the final 2:06 of the game. Those six, though, helped the Wolverines mightily in their 11-0 run to close out the contest over the No. 18 Boilermakers. Walton has certainly experienced his share of ups and downs for the Wolverines this year, but he's delivered in some extremely crucial situations. Freshman Impact — Redshirt freshman D.J. Wilson: The Wolverines' frosh aren't getting a long run, but Wilson is still in the mix, while Beilein tries to find extra minutes out of non-regulars. Wilson averaged 6.3 minutes a game in the five contests up to and including the Wolverines' win over Purdue Feb. 13. He averaged 3.3 points and 1.5 rebounds in that span, but more importantly gave Michigan's big men a break during foul-trouble-induced time away from the court. — John Borton Redshirt freshman forward D.J.
