Larkin won the title of fastest skater and set a record for the fastest lap around a full rink, besting Mike Gartner's time of 13.386 seconds set in 1996. Larkin beat Predators defenseman Roman Josi on the shortened track in the first lap of the first event Jan. 30 at the NHL skills competition, fin‑ ishing in 12.894 seconds. That time easily stood to win the fastest skater. He then skated a full lap in just 13.172 seconds despite wobbling in turn three. "I really went into the last lap and said I was going to give it all I had. Why not just go for it?" Larkin told NHL.com. "I dug in pretty hard there … it could have been pretty bad, proba‑ bly would have been my last All‑Star Game if I kept falling, but luckily I got my footing." Josi was among those impressed with the rookie. "When I saw I was going against him, I wasn't expecting to win be‑ cause I know how fast he is from playing against him," said Josi, who ended up with the second‑fastest time of the preliminary round. "It's pretty impressive that he broke such an old record. He was flying out there." Larkin notched three assists and was on the ice for all of his team's goals in the Jan. 31 semifinals of the NHL All‑Star Game at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. He and the Atlan‑ tic Division All‑Stars beat the Metro‑ politan Division 4‑3 to earn a spot in the title game of the newly formatted three‑on‑three contest. Larkin drew an assist on the win‑ ning goal by Montreal's P.K. Subban with 4:38 left. He finished with three shots and a plus‑1 rating. "He's been a fantastic player all year," New Jersey Devils goaltender Cory Schneider, who played the sec‑ ond half for the Metropolitan team, told NHL.com. "I think he's beaten me a couple times in the season, and he doesn't seem like a kid his age. He seems like he's more poised and mature. "He's a real smart hockey player, let alone skilled. He definitely belonged
