Schlissel didn't overlook short-term AD icon Jim Hackett while introducing the new boss. "For more than a year, Jim served with a level of distinction and integ- rity befitting the University of Michi- gan's highest values," Schlissel said. "He accomplished a great deal in a very short time and leaves the depart- ment in wonderful shape. "He brought us Coach Harbaugh, contract extensions for coaches John Beilein and [women's basketball's] Kim Barnes Arico, a new apparel con- tract with Nike and, most importantly, has upheld the high expectations we have for the academic, social and community success of our student- athletes in our 31 teams." Manuel didn't try to hide his excite- ment over the situation and the loca- tion. He cited Schembechler and his own father, known as "Big Anthony," as his two greatest influences. The new U-M AD advised his dad of the good news by telephone. Manuel clicked off the call just slow enough to catch a heartfelt reaction Manuel lettered in football and track at Michigan from 1986-90, earned three degrees from the university and worked in its athletic department for eight years before being named the Director of Athletics at Buffalo in 2005.
