40 ■ THE WOLFPACKER BY MATT CARTER N C State has announced its fifth Hall of Fame induction class, to be enshrined in a gala at Reynolds Coliseum on Sept. 14, 2018. The six-member class will increase the Hall's membership to 42. Here are the six newest Wolfpack Hall of Famers. Joan Benoit Samuelson Women's Cross Country, 1977‑78 • Two-time All-American (1977 and 1978) in her two seasons at NCSU after transferring in from Bowdoin College. • Led the Wolfpack to a pair of ACC cross country titles. • After college, became a world-class marathon runner highlighted by winning the gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olym- pics in Los Angeles in the first-ever wom- en's marathon race at the Olympics. • Twice won the Boston Marathon. • Held the American Olympic and Ameri- can record in the marathon for over a decade. • Was voted the 1985 James E. Sullivan Award winner for the nation's top amateur athlete. Willis Casey Athletics Director, 1969‑86 Men's Swimming & Diving Coach, 1946‑69 • Coached four national champions and 33 All-Americans while never having a losing season in 24 seasons as the Pack's swimming and diving coach. • Won 11 ACC and Southern Conference swimming championships. • NC State's pool is named the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center. • During his tenure as athletics director, was responsible for the hires of Jim Valvano in basketball; Lou Holtz, Dick Sheridan and Bo Rein in football; Kay Yow in women's basketball; Richard Sykes in men's golf; Rollie Geiger in track and field and cross country; Don Easterling in swimming; Ray Tanner in baseball; and Mark Stevenson in women's gymnastics, among others. • Chaired the NCAA Committee on Men's Basketball that expanded the NCAA Tourna- ment field to include more than one team per conference, permitted freshman eligibility and allowed the return of slam dunks. Tim Clark Men's Golf, 1996‑98 • One of just four golfers in school history to be tabbed a three-time All-American (1996, 1997 and 1998), and he was the Golf Coaches Association Freshman of the Year in 1996. • Named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1996 and the ACC Player of the Year in 1997, and was selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary Team. • Twice won an NCAA Regional, the only Wolfpacker to accomplish that feat. • Ranks third all time at NCSU in tourna- ment victories and second in single-round stroke average. • Since joining the PGA Tour in 2002, has won twice, including the 2010 The Players Championship, and has registered top-three finishes at The Masters, U.S. Open and PGA Championship. THE ELITE OF THE ELITE NC State Announces Its 2018 Hall Of Fame Class Golfer Tim Clark earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors in 1996, was tabbed as the ACC Player of the Year in 1997 and was a three-time All-American for the Wolfpack.
